Responsible Investing in Emerging Markets - Aberdeen Standard Investments

There is no doubt that environmental, social, governance and political factors impact investment performance. Assessing and understanding these factors is even more important in emerging markets, where issues like pollution, quality of public services and infrastructure, rule of law or corruption affect the lives of billions of people. With often limited transparency engagement can be challenging, but finding win-win solutions can push EM decision makers towards a more sustainable development path.

Environmental sustainability through Energy Transition - BNP Paribas AM

Global energy demand is expected to grow by as much as 40% by 2050 as a result of population growth, urbanisation and rising incomes; however,
energy related activities today are responsible for 70% of global CO2 emissions putting us on an unsustainable path where solutions are urgently needed to meet this growth in demand whilst substantially changing the energy mix. We invest across 3 core themes that drive the energy transition which are Decarbonisation, Digitalisation and Decentralisation.

True sustainability cannot be reflected in one indicator - NN Investment Partners

For Hendrik-Jan Boer, «real» ESG integration is not just applying ESG scored from external providers. He views this as a very simple and basic filter that no longer provides alpha. «Why? Because the rest of the market also has access, and there’s often no logical economic link between the methodology of these scores and a company’s true business activities. What we do is focus on materiality, which requires close engagement with companies.» Sometimes, he says, looking closely at a company can lead to new insights that the market isn’t yet aware of. «I don’t mean non-public information, but information that wasn’t included in the company’s sustainability report, for example, perhaps because they don’t yet have one.»

Emerging Markets – adding value through assessing ESG factors - Vontobel AM

How to actively and sustainably increase earnings potential with emerging markets - This requires an active investment style that makes targeted use of the return opportunities of the asset class in combination with ESG as a risk management instrument. Emerging market companies are exposed to a higher number and different types of sustainability risk than their developed counterparts. If a company is involved in an ESG crisis, the consequences are often far-reaching, with the result that the stock plummets and is still traded at a discount for a long time after the incident. Taking ESG criteria into account can therefore pay off by deliberately avoiding companies that do not adequately address sustainability risks.
